Marchy Things.

Surely the whole world is wondering where on earth last March went and how we got to this March somehow? It was March last year that COVID swallowed most of the world as we know it whole and somehow we’ve ended up here, one year later, and still a bit confused.

Strange times, huh?

Anyway I feel like I haven’t written on here in ages (okay, just a few days, but still) and I wanted to write a little update so that maybe in a decade or two I can read back and think, “wow, I somehow actually survived those early years,” while I’m drinking cocktails and getting a full night’s sleep and not vacuuming twice a day.

So, onto the things!

Most importantly, cakes. We will have a two year old soon! We can’t quite believe it! And we have challenged ourselves to make her a Bluey birthday cake! And I can’t quite believe that either!

My husband is the one heavily pushing the artsy, ambitious, Instagrammable work of art for us to aspire to. Seriously, have a look at #blueycake. Some people are ridiculously talented and it’s mighty impressive. I, on the other hand, was voting for a simple cake (blue though), with maybe some sprinkles and cake toppers if we really wanted to get fancy. I like to think I’m more realistic about our probably-below-average cake talents. However, I wanted to be supportive so I’ve agreed to help with the Bluey cake masterpiece creation. I do have slight concerns that it’ll turn out looking demonic like those infamous hedgehog cakes, but I guess we’ll have to deal with that if (when) it happens. Maybe we could just remove the eyes or something to avoid terrifying our almost-two-year-old.

Cartoons. Lately, I’ve been very much enjoying the ZeppelinMoon cartoons by Amber Fossey. They are the perfect combination of sassy and motivational and heart-warming. Kind of like one of those mug cakes, but with instead of microwaves and chocolate it’s watercolour animals and poems. You get what I mean.

COVID. Just needed to say that I’m immensely grateful for how this country has handled the whole global pandemic situation. For treating it as more severe than the seasonal flu (which it is) and for the sacrifices that have been made. For months now it has been visible in places not making these sacrifices that it hasn’t actually paid off economically, or you know, more importantly, by people not dying. All that has happened is that millions of people have suffered, so how lucky are we to be living here? Another quick point: the vaccine is getting rolled out here over the next few months. What an absolute privilege for us and a form of kindness towards the elderly and those without stellar immune systems. Science is amazing, end of.

Chaos. Everything has been chaotic lately! Our house always looks tornado-ridden and some days I’m so touched out. I’m so grateful too, seeing my daughters grow and change little by little. But my goodness, these early years are full on. This morning, our toddler took approximately one bite out of ten different pears and left them all on the bench. Love me a rotting pile of once-bitten fruit. It’s not even forbidden. Love that for me!

Clothes. I’ve decided that I’d like to branch out with clothes and try wearing something fun or colourful once in a while. I think I’m mainly just inspired by Lucy & Yak dungarees and pinafores that keep popping up in ads. Also because these past few years I’ve been pregnant or breastfeeding, so that’s kind of limiting clothing-wise. Basically I’d like to branch out from jeans and t-shirts but I’m not really sure how. We shall see!

So that’s the end of our Marchy things update. It’s also noteworthy to add that today our toddler used the potty for the first time, and three times at that! All out of the blue. So we’ll see how that ventures out. And our baby is very smiley and chats away happily. They’re both lovely.

It gets easier (yes, yes it does).

Last night I had the privilege of reading this post by Emily Writes; a favourite author, advocate, and rebel of mine. And my goodness, her words rang true! When our toddler was about 6 weeks old, we were at one of our first Space sessions where lo and behold she screamed for most of the time. I was trying to hold back the tears as I watched all of my mum friends with their happy babies, seemingly having it all together and knowing what they were doing. I didn’t know why my baby screamed so much and why nothing I did would settle her. After cursing myself for leaving the house and swearing to never go back, I started talking to one of the session coordinators. She told me that she had four kids, much to my absolute horror in that moment. I had no idea how it was even humanly possible to cope with one child, let alone four! I felt as though I would be stuck beneath these tidal waves of desperation and drowning and just wanting it all to end, forever. I asked her how she did it, you know...

A review of the types of people who sell animals on TradeMe.

I’m always on the hunt for new internet rabbit holes to venture down during all these long nights. Sometimes I’ll just read random articles or follow a Wikipedia chain or read up about conspiracy theories just for the fun of it. I’m not too sure how I got into investigating (okay, that’s way too strong a word for staring at a screen to stop my eyelids dropping) the animals for sale on TradeMe, but here we are. Upon reading several listings and gasping at the price of these creatures, I began to notice some particular themes within each subset of seller. And because I don’t have anything better to do during these ungodly hours, I’ve categorised these sellers into neat, little boxes. Healthy stuff. Let’s start with the pigs. Surprisingly, pig sellers tend to be of very few words. I was lowkey disappointed because I expected an almost rambunctious air about them, verging on mildly jolly. However, most listings just include one or two blurry photos of the pigs at least 5m away in a paddoc...

Of birds and seed.

Earlier this week, our country got some disappointing, yet inevitable news. Community transmission of COVID-19 was back and as a result, we may all be returning to lockdown. While the government was working out what to do, everyone began to respond a little differently. Some played the blame game or jumped on ever so helpful conspiracy theories. Others started stockpiling toilet paper and flour again, as they seemingly must have used up their hoard from the previous lockdown. Some selfishly hurried off to their baches, trying to escape to a place where they could spend the time fishing. In my usual, unusual way, I decided that we immediately needed to get some wild bird seed. It’s not really the first thing you’d think to get when you’re preparing for a potential lockdown. Most would probably go for paint or vegetable seedlings or chocolate. But alas, this was my first thought to entertain my bird-enthusiast toddler. This posed the next question though, what to do with 1kg of bird seed...
